On July 1, 2023 the USFL held its second championship game since returning as a USFL-branded springtime professional football league in the United States. The Birmingham Stallions defeated the Pittsburgh Maulers by a final score of 28-12. The 8-team league showcased its best defense that season (Maulers) against the best offense (Stallions). The game took place at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

The Maulers played only one season during the original USFL run. That was the second season, 1984. The Maulers never returned to professional football until 38 years later when the USFL name was revived in the spring of 2022. This 2023 championship game also was the last game for the Maulers as the league merged with the XFL to form the UFL in 2024. The Maulers didn't return in 2024 nor 2025; and the recent announcement of the UFL's 2026 teams did not include the Maulers in any market.
In 2022 all USFL teams played in Birmingham Alabama due to pandemic restrictions and to reduce travel budget for the league's first year. The 2023 season had the Maulers play their home games in the same stadium (in Canton Ohio) due to not having a stadium to play in Pittsburgh for that season. Neither season of the Maulers, after the team folded in late 1984, ever played a game in Pittsburgh despite the original team name.
The Maulers image uploaded is owned as a NFT since the 2023 USFL league issued these NFTs as POAPs for attending games and/or participating in league activities for fans in their web3 Discord server. That server ceased to operate upon the news of the USFL/XFL merger when it became the UFL.
