Todaiji Jakiashisotokoro (Censer)

After a peaceful walk, I arrived at the Todaiji Jakiashisotokoro Censer, a magnificent and massive symbol of Tōdai-ji’s ancient spirit. Standing before this towering incense vessel, I felt the weight of more than a thousand years of devotion, craftsmanship, and temple history.

Tōdai-ji itself began as a temple founded in the Nara period, with origins in 728 and formal completion in 752, making it one of Japan’s most important Buddhist sites. The temple has endured fires, reconstructions, and centuries of change, yet it remains a powerful center of faith and heritage. The censer belongs to that living tradition, serving both as a ritual object and as part of the temple atmosphere that has welcomed worshippers and visitors for generations.
