Yu-kai Chou, who is a Co-Founder of Metablox, uncovered a photo of his father meeting Nelson Mandela, two months before Mandela received the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize!
Yu-kai Chou's father, Matthew Chou, was a Diplomat serving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan at the time. Matthew greeted Nelson Mandela at the VIP Lounge in the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa. They shook hands and bonded with understanding.
Eight months later, at the end of April, 1994, South Africa held its first democratic election with universal suffrage, culminating in Nelson Mandela being elected as President. This moment is often cited as one of the most significant in South African history.
Matthew Chou completed his duties and returned back to Taiwan later 1994, returning only in 2017 as the Ambassador of Taiwan to South Africa.
